So, you’ve decided to take the IELTS test. But wait—did you know you have a choice between taking the test on a computer or the traditional paper-based format? If you’re unsure which one is right for you, don’t worry—you’re not alone. Let’s dive into the key differences to help you make an informed decision.

IELTS computer delivered or Paper based
IELTS CDT vs PBT

Test Format and Content

First things first, whether you choose the computer-delivered or paper-based IELTS, the test format and content remain exactly the same. Both versions assess your Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking skills, and both are scored using the same criteria. So, no matter which option you go for, the test itself will cover the same ground.

Computer-Delivered IELTS

The computer-delivered IELTS is an incredible option for those who do not want to write on paper and are great at typing on computers.

Typing vs. Writing: In the computer-delivered test, you’ll type your answers for the Writing section, and select answers by clicking on-screen for the Listening and Reading sections. If you’re comfortable with typing and prefer the speed and ease of a keyboard, this might be the right choice for you.

Listening Section: One notable difference in the Listening section is that in the computer-delivered test, you’ll use headphones, which can help with clarity and concentration. Additionally, the questions appear on the screen while you listen, making it easier to follow along.

Test Timing: The computer-delivered test is available more frequently than the paper-based version, often with more flexibility in test dates. Results are also typically released faster, usually within 3–5 days, compared to the 13 days for the paper-based test.

On-Screen Features: During the Reading and Writing sections, you can take advantage of on-screen tools like highlighting text, copying and pasting, and adjusting font size. These features can make it easier to navigate through the test.

Paper-Based IELTS

The paper-based IELTS is the traditional format that many test-takers are familiar with. Here’s what to expect:

Handwriting vs. Typing: In the paper-based test, you’ll write your answers by hand for the Writing section and fill in answer sheets for the Listening and Reading sections. If you’re more comfortable with handwriting or prefer having a physical test paper in front of you, this might be the better option.

Listening Section: In the paper-based test, you’ll listen to the audio through speakers in the test room. After the Listening section, you’ll have an additional 10 minutes to transfer your answers from the question booklet to the answer sheet—something not available in the computer-delivered version.

Test Experience: Some people find the paper-based test more familiar and easier to manage, especially if they’re not as confident with technology. The tactile experience of flipping through pages and underlining key points can also be a comfort for those used to traditional exams.

Which One Is Right for You?

Choosing between the computer-delivered and paper-based IELTS depends on your personal preferences and strengths. If you’re a fast typist who’s comfortable with technology and you like the idea of getting your results quickly, the computer-delivered test might be your best bet. On the other hand, if you prefer the familiarity of pen and paper and want those extra 10 minutes to check your Listening answers, the paper-based test could be more up your alley.

Ultimately, both formats are designed to accurately assess your English language skills, so go with the one that makes you feel most comfortable and confident.

Until next time, keep calm and IELTS NUGGET on!

Happy learning and IELTS prepping!

>> Be careful while doing Mock Tests for the computer-delivered IELTS as there are many websites that are very substandard and you should NOT be using them! I will write another blog post on that soon! (God willing)
